Word file or DOCX file: what this converter accepts

“Word to PDF” and “DOCX to PDF” describe the same operation. DOCX is the file format Microsoft Word has used since Word 2007: when you save a document in Word today, you get a .docx file. HelloDocxToPdf converts Word files in DOCX format to PDF.

The older .doc format, and other formats such as ODT or RTF, are not supported. If you have one of these files, open it in Word or in any editor that reads it, choose Save as, select the Word Document (.docx) format, then convert the DOCX here. You get the same PDF, with the same layout.

What is kept when you convert Word to PDF

Converting a Word document to PDF freezes its appearance, so it reads the same on any device, with or without Word installed. The conversion reproduces the elements that most often break:

Fonts

Font families, sizes and styles (bold, italic, underline) are kept, so headings and body text read as they do in Word. If your document uses an unusual font, embed it in the DOCX before converting for the most faithful result.

Tables

Rows, columns, borders, shading and cell contents keep their structure, including tables that run over several pages.

Headers and footers

Headers, footers and page numbers appear on every page, exactly where Word places them.

Images

Pictures, logos and charts stay at their position and size, in the text flow or anchored next to a paragraph.

Page breaks and layout

Page breaks, margins and orientation (portrait or landscape) follow your document's page setup, so the PDF has the same pages as the Word file.

Free up to 10 MB, larger Word files with a plan

The converter on this page is free for Word files up to 10 MB, with no sign-up and nothing to install: it works from your browser, in English or French. Most CVs, letters, contracts and reports are well below this limit.

For heavier documents, paid plans start at €9.90 per month and accept files up to 100 MB, with batch conversion, API access and priority support. If your file is just over the limit, you can also reduce its size first: the guide linked below explains how, mostly by compressing the images.

Privacy: your Word file is deleted right after conversion

Converting Word to PDF online means sending the document to a server. Here is what happens to it: the file travels over an SSL/TLS encrypted connection, is converted, and the original DOCX is deleted immediately afterwards. Neither the Word file nor the PDF is stored on our servers.

The servers are located in the European Union (Amsterdam), as stated in our legal notice. Read the legal notice

When to convert a Word document to PDF

CV or resume

A PDF keeps your resume's layout on every screen and printer, whatever fonts the recruiter has installed, and it is not edited by mistake when forwarded.

Contract

Send a contract as a PDF to fix its content and layout before signature: page numbers, clauses and tables stay where you placed them.

Thesis or dissertation

Universities usually ask for a PDF. Headings, tables, headers and footers and page breaks are reproduced from the Word file, so the printed version matches the file you wrote.

Invoice or quote

Invoices and quotes written in Word go out as PDFs: a fixed document that opens everywhere and looks the same for the recipient.

Word to PDF: frequently asked questions

Is converting Word to PDF free here?

Yes, for Word files in DOCX format up to 10 MB, with no account. Paid plans, from €9.90 per month, raise the limit to 100 MB per file and add batch conversion and API access.

Can I convert an old .doc file to PDF?

Not directly: the converter accepts DOCX files only. Open the .doc in Word, save it as a Word Document (.docx), then convert the DOCX. The layout is the same.

Will the PDF look exactly like my Word document?

Fonts, images, tables, headers and footers and page breaks are kept, so the PDF has the same pages as the Word file. The most common difference comes from fonts that are not embedded in the DOCX: embed them in Word before converting.

Is my document safe?

The transfer is encrypted with SSL/TLS and the original file is deleted immediately after conversion. Nothing is stored, neither the DOCX nor the PDF.

Can I convert several Word files at once?

The free converter handles one file at a time. Batch conversion is included in the paid plans, along with API access for automated conversion.

Do I need to install anything?

No. The conversion works from your browser on any computer, with the interface in English and French. There is nothing to download.
